Traveling to southern Colorado anytime soon?
For those tourists who might find themselves in southern Colorado during the summertime, I recommend a visit to the awe-inspiring Chimney Rock Archaeological Site, which inspired White Shell Woman. Please take
note – this group of Anasazi ruins, which is situated on the eastern section of the Southern Ute reservation, is not to be confused with any of the several ‘Chimney Rocks’ in Colorado, such as the well-known geographical feature on the Ute Mountain Ute reservation, which is located in the SW corner of CO, and borders the Southern Ute res.
The CR Rock Archaeological Site described in White Shell Woman is located between Durango and Pagosa Springs, a few miles south of the junction of Routes 160 and 151, and just west of 151.
You probably won’t realize how special this site is until you visit the “temple”, an isolated ruin which is situated on a rather narrow mesa – and view the Twin War Gods.
